RESEARCH GRANT COMPETITION 2019

GPLASC UNDERGRADUATE TRAVEL RESEARCH GRANT COMPETITION 2019

The Greater Philadelphia Latin American Studies Consortium (GPLASC) is pleased to announce the competition for travel grants to undergraduate students interested in conducting research in Latin America. Successful students may use the award to undertake research during the summer of 2019. Grants vary in size, depending on the research project. The maximum amount per grant is $1,500. The GPLASC travel grants cover research expenses such as travel, room and board, and photocopying. The grant, however, does NOT fund study at a foreign institution, tuition abroad, internship fees, or purchase of durable equipment, such as cameras, computers, or camcorders. The grant may be combined with grants from other sources.

GPLASC grants will NOT be made directly to students but to their departments or universities. Prior arrangements must be made in advance of receiving funds that the student has been granted permission to conduct research from their schools along with the necessary travel insurance.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students, except graduating seniors, from Colleges and Universities within the Consortium are eligible to apply. All majors are encouraged to apply; however, students must demonstrate a commitment to Latin American Studies through their coursework. Recipients will be required to make a presentation on their research to the GPLASC community in late fall 2019 or spring 2020 at the annual GPLASC-sponsored student research conference.

Deadline: Complete applications must be sent electronically by Monday March 4, 2019 to greaterphillylasconsortium@gmail.com. The grant recipients will be announced on Monday March 15, 2019. A committee of faculty members from the GPLASC consortium will make the final decisions on the grant applications. The applications must include the following:

  1. A cover sheet with a short project title along with the applicant’s name, university affiliation, undergraduate class, mailing address, phone number, and email address.
  2. A concise description of the proposed travel project with a brief summary of the project’s objectives and how the project contributes to the applicant’s undergraduate educational interest.
  3. Tentative dates and destinations of the trip
  4. A budget including airfare
  5. The applicant’s qualification to conduct the proposed research, including foreign language skills.
  6. A letter of recommendation on the departmental letterhead from a faculty member who has taught the applicant at least one course in the past. The letter should comment on the feasibility of the research project and the applicant’s ability to undertake such project, among others. The letter should be sent electronically by the faculty member to greaterphillylasconsortium@gmail.com
  7. A statement of support from the applicant’s department or university to which the GPLASC funds will be distributed.
  8. An official student transcript.

WARNING: Students should keep in mind that travel grants may not be awarded to those seeking to do research in countries or areas of countries under the US State Department’s travel warning. See the link at: https://www.osac.gov/Pages/Home.aspx. It is highly recommended that students use their school’s international/overseas studies office to register with whichever organization their school works with to ensure a safe travel abroad experience.

When, How, and Where:

All submissions must be submitted electronically without exception by Monday March 4, 2019 to greaterphillylasconsortium@gmail.com

Humanity in Action Fellowship programs seek to educate, connect and inspire future leaders to be responsible citizens in the broadest range of fields– government and diplomacy, journalism, entrepreneurship and business, grassroots activism, science, academia and culture and the arts.

Upon successful completion of these programs, Fellows will join the global network of over 1,700 Humanity in Action Senior Fellows. As Senior Fellows, they are eligible for advanced professional and educational opportunities, including fellowships in the U.S. Congress, the European Parliament and organizations like the ACLU and the NAACP.

The Humanity in Action Fellowship programs provide opportunities for collaborative learning and problem solving. These programs are designed for those who seek to enrich and broaden their knowledge and skills with various and often conflicting perspectives. As such, the programs are testing grounds for thinking anew with others about complex issues of diversity and democracy in historical and contemporary terms. The programs focus, through educational seminars and site visits, on vulnerable populations and the unfulfilled goals of just democratic societies. The programs do not engage in on-the-ground training for political activism, although some programs emphasize campaigns to fight prejudice through social media and other means.

We also have an important race to reelect Jim Tedesco as the Bergen County Executive along with reelecting two imcumbent Freeholders. The internship will be dynamic and fast paced and will be a great opportunity to see what the Democratic Party does in Bergen County and NJ.

  • tracking candidate activities and issues
  • helping with communications, especially social media
  • working with local party organizations to party build
  • doing outreach work to our different constituencies
  • staffing our candidates and attending political events
  • assisting with our fundraising operation
  • doing research to assist our candidates and staff
  • participating in direct voter contact
  • helping around our Hackensack office.

Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with our candidates and the staff of DCBC as well as interact with important Democrats in Bergen County. They will learn how parties work and how campaigns are run from the inside, and will make important connections. We will work with interns to ensure that they experience all different aspects of working on a campaign and being part of a party organization.

This is an unpaid internship, but the experience will be invaluable for any student who is interested in politics. This will give students a great chance to experience NJ politics from the inside.

The Latin American News Digest

This is a reminder that there is still time to apply for Summer internships.

The Latin American News Digest is seeking qualified students for a limited number of internships for Summer 2018. Because the goal of the Digest is essentially a didactic one, to spread the word about news from Latin America, we feel strongly about providing the opportunity for students to participate in this process. Student writers and researchers contribute to our weekly issues by aggregating and writing summaries of news articles found in Latin American sources. Ideally, internships happen in tandem with an independent study led by a faculty member of the appropriate department, but this is not a requirement. The result is an enriching experience for students who discover a variety of perspectives within the Latin American media. Students are able to identify trends and anomalies in the region, giving them a much greater breadth of knowledge and understanding of the hemisphere in which they live.

Intern responsibilities:

Interns must be able to write brief aggregations in English that summarize multiple perspectives from newspapers written in Spanish, and sometimes in Portuguese or English. Typically, interns write 1000-1200 words per week (3-4 section articles or News in Brief items). Interns generally work approximately five-six hours per week with most of that work falling on Wednesdays and Thursdays since submissions are due on Fridays. This internship does not require onsite work. Interns work remotely, but need to be readily available via email, cell and skype.

Summer 2018 internships begin on May 15 and end on August 31. Interns are expected to be available during that time; however, consideration will be given to “breaks” in the schedule if they are arranged with sufficient prior notice.

Intern qualifications:

Interns must possess excellent writing skills in English and advanced reading skills in Spanish. Ability to read Portuguese is a plus. Familiarity with Latin American civilization and culture, as well as general current events is highly recommended. The ability to meet deadlines is essential.

Application process:

Interns should submit a letter of interest as an example of their writing skills to Dr. Jana M. DeJong (jdejong@hsc.edu). The letter should outline the intern’s experience (coursework, travel, etc.) as it pertains to language skills and knowledge of Latin America. The names and contact information for two references must be included. One of the references must address the applicant’s ability to write in English, while the other should address the applicant’s reading ability in Spanish and/or Portuguese. One of the references should also speak to the applicant’s familiarity with Latin America. The letter of interest and contact information for two references must be submitted by April 6, 2018, (or thereabouts).

If you have any questions, please contact wjohngreen@latinamericannewsdigest.com

Meet the Man Running a $100 Million

Campaign to Save the Republican Majority

With so many topics headlining today’s political conversation, it’s critical for millennials to make their voices heard (like the Students for Life club recently tried to do, and you all handled so well), and this is the perfect way by earning college credit while doing so. One of the main goals of our internship program is setting them up for success not only now, but looking ahead as well, and past interns have found the program to be particularly helpful in enhancing their resumes for future political endeavors. In my experience, students have parlayed time on a campaign into positions with state government, as well as on Capitol Hill; it’s very likely!

I’m sure you are busy, but I was hoping you could pass the attached flier along to your students either by printing off hard copies or by email, either works well, and I’d be more than happy to answer any questions that you may have beforehand. And if you do forward this information along, I would like you to let me know so that I can thank you properly. It would be wonderful to have some Poli Sci applicants come from such a reputable, namesake institution like yours of this great state! I appreciate this so much, and if you would like to get a feel of just what exactly I’m starting up out here, please read this tremendously written TIME article that feature CLF’s head honcho Corry Bliss, as well as the previous office team I had back in Omaha, NE, (I’m in the blue sweater), and I definitely look forward to hearing from you soon!

James P. Fox Memorial Fund

This scholar program is a mentorship program in public service and public affairs, Fox Scholars are matched one-on-one with an experienced mentor working in a related public affairs area. There is a stipend offer of $1000.

The James P. Fox Memorial Fund was founded in 2017 to create a living legacy to honor Jamie Fox (October 30, 1954 – February 20, 2017), recognize his lifelong commitment to public service, and to fund educational opportunities in areas about which he cared deeply.

In February 2018, the James P. Fox Memorial Fund announced the establishment of two academic mentoring programs in partnership with Montclair State University and The College of New Jersey. Both initiatives bring to life one of Jamie’s passions: mentoring young people and helping them understand what it takes to succeed in government service. Each program (#FoxMentors) shares one goal: to provide students with real-life public-sector experience and advice through mentorship and networking opportunities, with the goal of facilitating knowledge of and access to public service employment opportunities.

PennEnvironment

My name is Tom Fogel, the Campaign Director of the PennEnvironment office in Doylestown, PA. I was hoping you could pass this opportunity along to as many people as possible. PennEnvironment is partnering with Work for Progress to do grassroots voter mobilization for environmental candidates. PennEnvironment is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy group that works to protect air, water and open spaces, and to make sure citizen voices are heard in Harrisburg and Washington.

2018 is a crucial election year, and we’re running a critical grassroots voter outreach operation to educate and mobilize voters around environmental issues in Bucks County. We’re hiring people to work out of our Doylestown office during this final week to get out the vote. We’re looking for candidates who work hard, communicate well, and want to make a difference. We are also hiring for leadership positions for candidates who have previous campaign experience, or have held leadership roles in other fields.

These next few weekends are a great opportunity to make a big difference, because Bucks County is going to be a critical county in the election and for the future of the state. Many of the elections we’re working on can come down to the wire, which means that the work we do in these final days could well make the difference in these races and for the entire state. We can impact the direction of Pennsylvania for years to come, and everyone can be part of it.

Interested folks can apply here, or call us at 215-983-4776.

Latin American News Digest

Internships Available

The Latin American News Digest is seeking qualified students for a limited number of internships for Fall 2017. Because the goal of the Digest is essentially a didactic one, to spread the word about news from Latin America, we feel strongly about providing the opportunity for students to participate in this process.

Student writers and researchers contribute to our weekly issues by aggregating and writing condensed versions of news articles found in Latin American sources. Ideally, internships happen in tandem with an independent study led by a faculty member of the appropriate department, but this is not a requirement. The result is an enriching experience for students who discover a variety of perspectives within the Latin American media.

As a culmination of their internship, students get their own byline in the December issue by researching and writing their own aggregation. The July issue intern aggregations are on the site now, which you can access at www.latinamericannewsdigest.com.

Intern responsibilities:

Interns must be able to write brief aggregations in English that summarize multiple perspectives from newspapers written in Spanish, and sometimes in Portuguese or English. Typically, interns write 1000-1200 words per week (4-6 section articles or News in Brief items). Interns generally work approximately five-six hours per week with most of that work falling on Wednesdays and Thursdays since submissions are due on Fridays. This internship does not require onsite work.  Interns work remotely, but need to be readily available via email, cell phone, or skype.

Fall 2017 internships begin on September 5 and end on January 5, 2018. Interns are expected to be available during that time; however, consideration will be given to “breaks” in the schedule if they are arranged with sufficient prior notice.

Intern qualifications:

Interns must possess excellent writing skills in English and advanced reading skills in Spanish and/or Portuguese.  Familiarity with Latin American civilization and culture, as well as general current events, is essential, as is the ability to meet deadlines.

The letter of interest and contact information for two references must be submitted by August 25, 2017.

About the Program

Interns will work alongside our experienced team of campaign operatives to plan and execute a robust campus outreach program and advocate on behalf of progressive Democratic candidates up and down the ballot, including candidates for Senate and Assembly, and Phil Murphy, the Democratic Candidate for Governor.

At the core of our program is the idea that true progressive change is achieved from the bottom up, engaging local activists and giving them the tools to make differences in their own communities.  As such, our program is student driven–while our campaign organizers provide training, set goals and oversee operations, our campus outreach program is managed and directed by students who demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and passion for our message and cause.

  •      Brainstorming and enacting creative plans to contact and mobilize students like you
  •      Developing and carrying out a regular voter registration program to meet statewide campaign goals
  •      Raising awareness and boosting civic engagement on campus through visibility and outreach events
  •      Identifying and persuading voters to support our progressive candidates and causes
  •      Building teams of like-minded students willing and ready to join our movement
  •      Coordinating operations with other student organizations and our local campaign teams

Requirements

Qualified candidates will have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and a desire to support Democrats and effect progressive change across the state.  All are encouraged to apply, regardless of experience. Candidates will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the summer and fall, with preference for availability during fall move-in days.  Applications should include a brief statement of interest and a resume. Submit applications to Daniel Fleiss at victory2017@paranoandassociates.com with subject “Campus 2017 Application.”

Environment New Jersey

Environment New Jersey is hiring students to work on our campaigns this summer in New Jersey. We’re looking for folks that are hardworking, good communicators, and committed to making positive change.

This summer our top campaign is saving the bees! This has been a problem for over a decade, but now bee keepers are reporting losing on average a third of bee populations each year. This is a huge environmental and economic issue, because bees pollinate everything from strawberries to coffee, and even the food that dairy animals eat which give us ice cream and cheese.

One cause of this issue is that bees have increasingly exposed to a class of insecticides called neonicotinoids, which are powerful neurotoxins. However, chemical companies like Syngenta are working to convince the EPA to raise the allowable limit of one of their bee-killing pesticides by more than 400 times.

That’s why we are working to push Obama’s Environmental Protection Agency to speed up the testing on neonics, and to eventually ban the use of these toxins. But to do that, we need to demonstrate the public’s support. To win this campaign, we are hiring folks to get out into communities, and build support for this issue based out of our New Brunswick office. Over the course of the summer you can expect to make between $4,000-$6,000 and make $10-$15/HR. It’s a great way to build your resume, like an internship, but you get paid.

Mexican Cultural Center and The Consulate of Mexico

We are writing on behalf of the Mexican Cultural Center and The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia, PA to let you know about our annual Mexican Independence Day Festival, which is part of the PECO multicultural series, which will be held on Sunday, September 18th from 2-8pm at Penn’s Landing.

This event is one of the largest and most well-attended cultural events in the area, with around 11,000 attendees annually. Our festival offers live performances by popular musicians, Mexican cuisine provided by local restaurants, a traditional “El Grito” ceremony led by the Consul of Mexico, a Kid’s Corner, and other activities. It is a great event that helps the local Mexican community stay connected to their heritage, as well as educating the region on Mexican culture.

We are currently in search of volunteers to help us with set-up, clean-up, and the running of different stations during the festival. Volunteers with a proficiency in Spanish would be preferable for our event; however, all are welcome to participate.

Put A Price On

Put A Price On It is a grassroots campaign working to engage millennials to advocate for something incredibly important: a price on carbon. This Fall we’re kicking off this campaign, which we are working on in conjunction with Years of Living Dangerously, an Emmy award winning television show from National Geographic.

Our movement is picking up steam, as we testified in front of the DNC a few weeks ago about the importance and urgency surrounding a carbon price! In fact, the DNC actually adopted a carbon price into the platform.

Our primary focus over the next six months will be recruiting and engaging students to lobby for a carbon price, and securing endorsements from college presidents.

Student leaders from your university can play a vital part of this effort.

We’re currently accepting applications for our fellowship program, in case you know of anyone who might want to apply. We’d love to hear from as many applicants as possible! Any questions can be sent to Cassidy Jones at cassidy@oregonclimate.org!

Ideally internships happen in tandem with an independent study led by a faculty member of the appropriate department, but this is not a requirement.

Typically interns write 1000-1200 words per week (4-6 section articles or News in Brief items). Interns generally work approximately five-six hours per week with most of that work falling on Wednesdays and Thursdays since submissions are typically due by noon Eastern Standard Time on Fridays. This internship does not require onsite work. Interns work remotely, but need to be readily available via email, cell and skype.

Spring 2017 internships begin on January 3 and end in mid-May.

Jana M. DeJong ( jdejong@hsc.edu ). The letter of interest and contact information for two references must be submitted by November 28, 2016.
